Worn right, they're one of the most versatile shoes going—equally at home with cropped trousers in an office and with rolled denim on a Saturday. The trick is knowing which loafer, and how to wear it, because there's a real gap between looking effortless and looking like you're off to a shareholders' meeting.
Know your loafer
A penny loafer is the all-rounder, casual-to-smart. A tasseled loafer leans dressier and a little old-school. A horsebit is polished and slightly flashy. A suede loafer is the most relaxed of the lot and the easiest to wear casually. If you're buying one, start with a penny loafer in brown leather or suede—it does the most jobs.
The sockless summer look
This is loafers at their best. Cropped or cuffed chinos, bare ankles (or invisible no-show socks, please—nobody wants sweat-ruined leather), a loafer, and a linen shirt or polo. Instant continental summer. Suede loafers shine here. The exposed ankle is the whole point; a loafer with a long trouser break and thick socks loses all the ease.
With denim, the smart-casual sweet spot
Dark, slim jeans cuffed at the ankle with a leather penny loafer and a knit or oxford shirt is a genuinely great weekend look—more considered than sneakers, less formal than a proper shoe. Brown loafers over black for this; black can tip the look too formal against denim.
Dressed up, but not stiff
With tailored trousers and a blazer, loafers are a lighter alternative to lace-ups—smart without the full seriousness of an oxford. Match a sleeker style (horsebit or polished penny) here, and mind your socks: either a proper dress sock that coordinates, or bare ankle if the setting's relaxed enough.
A couple of things to avoid
Chunky rubber-soled loafers with a suit read clumsy—save those for casual. And white sport socks with loafers is the one combination that undoes everything. Either commit to no-show socks or wear real ones; there's no in-between that works.
Why they're worth it
A good loafer is slip-on convenience with grown-up looks, and it spans more of your week than almost any other single shoe.
